This five-page PowerPoint presentation is a Pre-Reading Activity and Class Discussion for Wayson Choy's short story "The Jade Peony." For those teachers teaching the novel, _The Jade Peony_, this activity also work very well, indeed. Actually, it was originally designed when I taught the novel to my English 10/11 class.
This activity centres around issues of cultural hybridity, as brought out in the text. How does one negotiate between different (and potentially competing) cultural identities? Students access this through a collection of images and are asked to sort them, and then explain their rationale for doing so. These are then followed by guiding questions for class discussion, designed to elicit thoughtful responses centring around making personal connections, as well as empathizing with others.
Students like the visual element to this lesson/activity, and they enjoy sorting the images and then discovering how their classmates sorted the same images differently. Much productive discussion/debate occurs when students explain their rationale for doing so.
I hope you and your students enjoy this activity as much as I do with my students.
