After teaching my students the basic elements of a short story, they read different short stories in small groups or pairs and do a presentation on their story. I show them an example presentation based on "The Gift of the Magi," which we previously read.
Their presentation must include: the 5 stages of plot (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution), the external and internal conflicts, the setting, characters (protagonist, antagonist, supporting characters), and an explanation of theme.
Also, included is a very simple rubric for grading the presentation, and a graphic organizer for them to use before they create the PowerPoint. The organizer is included for both the students and so that the teacher can check on the students accuracy and detail before they create their presentation.
