This test can be given at the end of a short story unit to assess how students can handle a cold read of a short story. An alternate use of this test is as a pretest before beginning a short story unit to assess how much students know about short story structure. This test is based on Rawlings' story "A Mother in Mannville." Students are asked to read the story and respond to short answer questions about such elements as setting, characterization, and plot structure. A student answer sheet is included. Teachers will need to secure a copy of the story online or in a literature text.
