Product Description

Short stories are a great way to bring many voices and themes into your English class. They're nice and snackable - easy to fit in between other units or right before holidays, and easily combined into a quality unit with something for everyone.

But what do you do to keep the discussion of each new story engaging for your students?

These short story stations give you five ways to approach any short story or short story unit. The stations get students examining characterization, setting, and style, but they also give them a chance to practice some real-world argument (convincing you, their teacher, that short stories are or are not a powerful addition to the curriculum) and try out a writing makerspace project to inspire the start of a short story of their own.

You can use these stations as...

  • a lesson plan for several days worth of work after a story or set of stories
  • a continuing element in a short story unit, having students do a different station after a different story on each of five days
  • the basis for a portfolio, having students work through stations in class, then choose several of their pieces of classwork to expand into a significant final project

Check out the preview for a closer look at all five stations.
