Product Description
This unit can be used for ANY short story, play or mini-novel. It will help your students organize the story in a way that helps them meet standards. Students don’t just read the story but are asked to think about the themes, make connections and understand the story at a deeper level. This packet is not meant to be completed in one sitting and does not need to be completed in order.

Below are suggestions based on how I use the packet…

1. Word Web – Students create a word web based on one of themes of the book. I give students one or two words (depends on the story) to choose from and they create a web. This helps students to focus on a central idea as they read.

2. Quick Write – On either the first or second day of the story study, I write a question on the board and have students write and share answers.

3. Vocabulary – Vocabulary is an ongoing focus of my class and I use this space to help students gather and learn new words.

4. Setting – Students draw and color a picture of the setting of the story (or a particular scene). In older grades, I also have students explain how the setting impacts the story. How would the story be different if the setting was different.

5. Plot Diagram – Students fill in the information on the plot structure.

6. Character Descriptions – Students pick out main characters and secondary characters to write a short description of the character that includes their personality, likes, dislikes, etc… Then, based on what they learn from the story, students draw a picture of the character.

7. Figurative Language – Students complete an organizer that identifies three uses of figurative language in the story. This is a separate sheet that could be removed from packet if this is not focus or age appropriate for your class.

8. Stop ‘N Jot – At the end of each page or section, have students stop and write down a summary of what they just read, any connections they can make with the text and a sketch of the section to help them remember what they read.

9. Clarifying Questions – Students write questions to a character and then, based on what they have learned about the character, they answer the question from the character’s perspective.
