Synopsis: John Blundell wants to marry Miss Turnbull. Their courtship had been going well, until the dashing young Sergeant Daly came to town to visit relatives and now seems to be stealing Miss Turnbull’s heart. Mr. Turnbull is in a hurry for his daughter to wed so that he can remarry. (His fiancé won’t marry him until his daughter is out of his house.) He hatches a plan to help the quiet, unassuming Mr. Blundell appear a hero in his daughter’s eyes. But “Blundell’s Improvement” to the plan provides an amusing, surprising ending to this sweet story.

Although many of Jacobs’ short stories are humorous, he is most famous for his horror story "The Monkey's Paw". “Blundell’s Improvement” is filled with gentle humor and appropriate for grades 5 and up.
