"Unthawing" is an original realistic fiction short story for readers in grades 4-6. Told in first person, it focuses on a single Saturday trip between father and son--and explores the subtle change in their strained relationship. This story can be used to teach:
Point of view--The main character describes events from his perspective. How is his perspective different from his father's?
Voice--The main character has a distinctive voice in the narrative.
