"Unthawing" is an original realistic fiction short story for readers in grades 4-6. Told in first person, it focuses on a single Saturday trip between father and son--and explores the subtle change in their strained relationship. This story can be used to teach:

Point of view--The main character describes events from his perspective. How is his perspective different from his father's?

Voice--The main character has a distinctive voice in the narrative.

Symbolism--The title and other details symbolize the change in relationship.

Inferences--The reader can make inferences about the characters and their emotions based on their dialogue and actions.

Please note: This includes the story ONLY. If you would like the story plus my activities, please look at the unit below.
