Want your students to feel connected to history as well as hone the skills needed to be successful readers and writers? Give this lesson a try! This lesson is designed to cover two 45 minute periods. You will receive the lesson plan, my original short story “Mill Music”, an background informational text about life in mill villages and activities including, discussion, group work strategies and writing prompts. Also included is an answer key. Students will get a more personalized view of the life of a textile mill worker, the expectations of children, and the strength of mill communities, all while practicing drawing evidence from texts. My students consistently rank short stories as one of the best tools I use to help them retain learning and make history more “real” for them.
