Short Vowel Books for Emergent Readers is a set of five books that is perfect for early readers who have a grasp of consonant and short vowel sounds and are learning to blend phonemes to make words. The stories and illustrations are engaging and have purpose. Each book has five pages with an illustration and three to six sentences. Each book has a topic.
The vocabulary in this set of five books is primarily CVC words, high frequency sight words (mostly Pre-Primer & Primer), a few number and color words and a few words with blends or consonant digraphs. Students can usually figure out the blends. The back page of each book has an alphabetized vocabulary list that identifies parts of words that are not easily sounded out.
Print the books on 110 lb card stock. Print pages 2 & 3 of this document on the two sides of a single sheet of card stock. Print pages 4 & 5 back to back, etc. When you print, choose ACTUAL SIZE in the Adobe Reader print options. If you forget to choose ACTUAL SIZE, your pages will not be centered. Once you have the pages printed, score down the middle and assemble. Staple with a long arm, saddle or booklet stapler. Because of the thickness of the card stock, you may want to trim the open edges of the booklet to make them even.
The five titles in this set are: My Pet Fish, Play Ball, Kids Help, Ladybugs Are Fun and Kids Play.
