Do your students struggle with those tricky short vowel sounds? They’ll love this clothes pin activity and get some great practice identifying middle sounds in CVC words.
Included in the pack are
- 16 photograph cards with two vowel choices
- 16 photograph cards with three vowel choices
- 2 Record sheets
- 2 Answer sheets
Simply cut out the cards (there are two per page) and laminate them. Then add some wooden clothes pins and you’re ready to go! The children select a card, look at the real life photograph of a common CVC word
and attach the clothes pin to the correct middle vowel sound. Once the children have placed all the pegs on the vowels they can record their answers on the record sheets. This gives them the opportunity to practice writing and also encourages them to double check each choice they made. Finally they can use the answer sheets to self assess their work.
Children will love the photographs of real animals and objects and they will help them to make connections between the CVC words and their lives. And squeezing the clothes pins provides them with some necessary fine motor skill
This activity can be easily differentiated
by selecting the cards with two or three vowel choices where appropriate. The two vowel cards also have the two consonant sounds written on them (e.g. p _ g) for added support. More capable children can use the three vowel cards which only have three lines (e.g. _ _ _) to remind them to sound out the three sounds in each CVC word.
