Mastering the short vowel sounds is challenging for young learners. These visuals represent gestures that accompany each short vowel sound. They provide an extra modality to learning and incorporate fun as students attach each gesture to it's appropriate short vowel sound. Reference these cards and/or gestures as the short vowel sounds present themselves in given words. Consistent usage in large group settings and one on one work with students will help to promote mastery. The short /u/ sound is the class favorite as you and your students will pretend to hit yourselves in your OWN stomachs. Please caution students to use an appropriate amount of force as they make this gesture. Consistent use of these gestures really work, have fun!
