This assessment tool provides teachers information about their young readers' phonological awareness regarding short vowels to help them plan for meaningfully differentiated instruction. It is composed of four parts: hearing the sounds, reading CVC words in isolation, reading CVC words in context, and spelling CVC words with the correct short vowels. The data it yields will be helpful for planning purposeful differentiated reading groups that focus on specific short vowels and will indicate if students are ready to move beyond the study of those sounds.
