Working with word families is an effective way to get kids reading and help them learn to decode longer words.
These word family spinners focus on the short vowel sounds. There is a spinner for each vowel - a, e, i, o, and u, as well as spinners with a mixture of vowel combinations, for a total of 10 spinners!
I mount these circular spinners to tag board or run them on tag board. I bought plastic spinners at a teacher store in the game pieces section, and attached them to the tagboard. The spinners come in 2 pieces and just snap together. They actually work very well and spin easily. I have also used these with a paper clip and pencil!
I put a different spinner out every month or so, as the children learn new word families. They love to spin spinners and love to make lots of new words at the word work station at Daily 5.
