Have your students begging for word work time with this engaging short vowel phonics set! CVC words can be tricky for young readers to identify and blend. This literacy activity has students read sentences and short stories while highlighting the short vowel sounds/word families. All sentences use basic sight words and decodable text (mainly CVC words) to help build independent readers. Some pages focus on individual sounds in a story context. Students will then sort the words into the correct category and practice reading each sentence for fluency. Mini anchor charts are also included to reinforce each vowel. Highlighters make all of the difference with this activity and instantly adds excitement.
This activity works best for K-2 students, depending on their reading abilities or RTI groups. English Language Learners also benefit from the targeted sound practice. I like to use these pages during small groups in my classroom, as spelling homework, morning work, whole group phonics lessons while projected on the board, or as differentiated independent work during literacy stations. Answer keys are included for each page for your convenience or to help create a self-checking literacy center.
