This packet includes 5 phonics based centers focused on short "a" and short "i" words. It includes partner and independent centers. Great for first grade or second grade but could also be used for kindergarten students who are ready to read short vowel words and sentences.
Center 1: Race to the Top (partner game)
Students take turns spinning the two spinners to make and read short a or short i words. The student then covers the matching word on their board. The first person to cover all five words in the same word family is the winner. Some words are written multiple times on the game boards but students should only cover one word for each spin. Two different options are included to differentiate instruction: students can spin two spinners (beginning consonants and word families), blends the sounds, read the word and write the word, or cover the matching word OR students can spin only the word family spinner and write their own word that is the same word family.
Center 2: Under the Sea (partner game)
Students will take turns picking a card with rhyming pictures and they will say the picture names and the word family (ex; "ring, king, they both say "ing"). Both students will look to see if they have the matching word family on their boards and, if so, cover the word family. The winner is the first person to cover all nine word families on their board. This includes two game boards and 18 rhyming pictures cards.
Center 3: Picture Puzzles with Sentences: (independent or partner)
Students will put together the picture puzzles to make a complete picture and a complete sentence. Then students will read the completed sentences. Great way to move students on from putting together letters to make words on pictures puzzles to now putting together words to make complete sentences on picture puzzles. This center includes 24 picture puzzle cards with sentences.
Center 4: Does it Match? (independent or partner)
Includes 18 sentence cards. Students will read the sentences, check to see if the sentence matches the picture on the card, and then sort the cards under "Yes the words match the picture" or "No the words do not match the picture". Great way to make sure students are reading the sentences accurately.
Center 5: Short "a" and Short "i" Bingo (small group of six)
Students can take turns picking and reading short a or short i words. All students will look to see if they have the word on their boards and, if so, cover the word. The first person to cover four words in a row is the winner. Great activity to do with a small group for the conclusion of short a and short i lessons. This center includes 6 bingo boards and 20 word cards.
