An engaging game to assist students in identifying the long and short vowel sounds within words.
Students can play against the teacher, a partner or in two small teams. The aim of the game is race around the board and finish in the triangle end zone before your opponent does.
This game can be modified in a variety of ways to suit the needs, abilities and number of students that you are targeting.
Students choose their colour and place a matching coloured counter on their start point (outer most circle). They roll a dice and move their counter in the direction shown on the game board. When a student lands on a word, they are to read the word and identify whether the word contains a short or long vowel sound.
Students can record the words in a chart as they go, under headings of short and long vowel sounds (resource included).
Students read the word rolled and put that word into a sentence (resource included)
Students use the words recorded in the table to make sentences containing words with only either short or long vowel sounds.
Enjoy watching your students begin to make connections and establish spelling patterns and rules for words containing short and long vowel sounds.
