I have created a song to help my first graders become familiar with the vowels and the two sounds they can make. This little song is sung to the tune, Old MacDonald. Because our school teaches d'nealian print, I have created this presentation with that font. The vowels have the short and long symbols above them. I had to use the symbol inserts through Microsoft Office to get these symbols, and the font is different than the d'nealian. I also used the clipart through Microsoft Office for the little pictures beside the vowel sounds.
I project this up on my Smartboard, and we sing along. I have my students use their "wimpy" arms for the short vowel sound, which is taking their muscle arms and turning them "upside down." For the long vowel sound, we make "strong" muscle arms.
For the very last slide, we slow it down when we say A-E-I-O-U and do wiggly jazz hands to end (very dramatic). They get a kick out of this!
I hope you enjoy this as much as we do! Thanks for looking!!
