This file is a differentiated word work game for students to practice reading words with a short vowel a sound and a long vowel a spelled a_e, ai, and ay.
My first grade students LOVE this game!
The first two pages with white spaces on the castle are the game board. Print them out, laminate them, and tape them together to make one castle.
The next two pages in black and white are recording sheets. Print them out and tape them together so that students can record their answers on their own castles to take home.
The following four pages are the puzzle pieces. Laminate and cut out every piece with a word on it. Any piece without a word is not needed and can be thrown away. This packet contains two different sets of words. The pages with the number 1 at the top are easier words. The pages with the number 2 at the top are more challenging words.
How to play:
Students choose a puzzle piece with a word on it and decide if the word has a long A sound or a short A sound. They place the word on the castle game board in an empty white space under short or long A.
When students finish sorting the words, they can record their answers on their castle recording sheets.
