Station 1: My Uu Book: Students draw a picture on each page of a word that has the short /u/ sound. Then label the picture in the space below.
Challenge: Students will write sentences about the pictures they draw.
Station 2: Color, Cut, and Label: Students color the pictures that have the /u/ sound at the beginning or end. Then they cut them out, glue them to their mat, and label each word. Magic Square: Students create words using the letters in the square only.
Station 3: Word Search: Students will illustrate the pictures with the short /u/ sound, find in the word search then write a sentence.
Station 4: Cube Game: Students will roll the cube and fill in the game mat with a short /u/ word.
Station 5: “Umbrella Opposites”: Students lay the opposite cards face down. Students try to make a match the opposites. For example, up matches down.
Station 6: Students will pound the word with their fist, then tap each individual sound. After that, students will use letter tiles to build the words or stamp the words in the boxes. Then students will write a sentence about one of the pictures.
Station 7 Vowel Sort: Have students sort the pictures depending on the vowel sound they hear. Have them label the pictures.
Station 8: Back to Back Game: Students sit back to back with a partner. They draw a card from the bag. They give clues to their partner to help them guess the short /u/ word on the card.
Station 9: Umbrella Craftivity and Writing: Students use art materials to create an umbrella. Then students glue the umbrella onto the craftivity page. Then students paint rain drops. Finally, students write a story about an umbrella.
CHALLENGE: Stations 1, 2, 4, 6, and 9 have additional pages that use the same activity but with HIGHER skill levels needed to complete them.
FREEBIE: Alphabet Soup: Students cut out letters from magazines and glue onto their sheet to make their own alphabet soup. Not on choice board.
FREEBIE:ABC Order: Students cut out the letter tiles and glue them onto their “Umbrella ABC board. You can also laminate the tiles and the “Umbrella ABC” board and reuse from year to year.
