This power point created by Heather Bates, SLP was designed to assist in teaching short vowel awareness and identification to students. The 1st several slides can be used to develop sound segmentation skills along with improved awareness of short vowel sounds. As you show pictures on your SmartBoard screen students can participate in several ways:
1, See It, Say It, Move It - each student has a sound segmentation card at their desk along with manipulatives (blocks, M&M’s, etc.). As the word is segmented and each sound is produced they are to slide the manipulative into each box.
2. What is the Short Vowel Sound? - each student has a short vowel card at their desk along with a manipulative. As the picture is presented they place the manipulative in the box that corresponds to the short vowel in the target word.
3. Short vowel learning center – copy, cut, and laminate the smaller picture pages and have students sort the pictures based on the short vowel sound heard. Record on recording sheet.
4. Bean bag throw – show pictures on SmartBoard and have students toss a green, yellow, and red bean bag to the corresponding colored circle on the screen as they say each sound in the target word. This can be done along with the See It, Say It, Move It cards.
