This internet activity will have students accessing the Library of Congress' website, specifically their WWI pictorial collections and brief speech recordings during WWI. Each of the first three steps begin with answering a question or two from a short essay then move onto combing through newspaper pictorials about- Military Technology, The Lusitania Disaster, and Pictures as Propaganda where they also are guided with a question or two. Next, students listen to the recordings (I have them use their earbuds) and summarize, and finally they go to a separate website to study US propaganda posters. Great for studying propaganda, US reluctant involvement, or just seeing the Great War through an American lens. I usually break it up into two days, or assign the other half as homework.
