These Don't Tell Polaroids are the perfect activity for students to practice and become confident adding detail in their writing. The PDF is A4 and needs to be printed double sided so the lines are on the back for the students to write.
This activity will work well when modelled and practiced as a class first. Students can brainstorm ways to substitute feelings for actions.
Example for first image:
Tell- I walked sadly along the path between the trees.
Show- I trudged through the damp fallen foliage, as I watched my breathe join the mist engulfing the surrounding woods.
I gave the students this activity in literacy groups after an explicit and modelled lesson. Students drafted on individual whiteboards before publishing them on the back of the polaroid.
This activity can be repeated as there are 28 different photos to chose from (more to come). I let the students pick from the pile of polaroids.
AUSSIE/ NSW TEACHERS- this is a teaching activity for cluster 12 marker 4 (year 6). Students could revisit a drafted piece of writing and critically assess where more details would improve the writing after completing this activity.
