To teach your students how to Show Not Tell in their writing, provide each student with one pretzel. Tell the class they will be writing about eating a pretzel, but they cannot write the word pretzel. Instead, they need to describe the five senses to show readers what is happening. For the first page, allow students to record what they see, feel, smell, hear, and taste. For the second page, have students combine all of their sentences from the first page to write a descriptive story about eating a pretzel. Your students will love Showing, Not Telling in their writing with this activity!
