Quick Assessments for Getting to Know Your Students

What is the purpose of these quick assessments?
These assessments are a way to get a general overview of a student’s
skills in reading, speaking, writing and mathematics. These quick
assessments are just one part of creating a learning profile of the

guided reading and math groups, when preparing for a conference or
meeting with school staff about a students’ progress, or for when you
get a new student during the school year.
Not all the assessments are necessary for all students. If you have
students entering kindergarten already reading fluently at higher
levels, you may decide not to spend time on assessing letter
identification or some of the phonemic awareness assessments. However,
later if you see them having some difficulty in writing or reading, you
may find it helpful to use some of these assessments to give you
additional data to help determine where their difficulties are in reading
