Although this activity is about a spooky attic, it does not have to be taught at Halloween. The idea of this writing assignment is to encourage students to use better word choice that will allow them to SHOW their readers versus simply TELL their readers.
This activity includes:
A checklist for students to use before, during, and after writing; a model page with before and after paragraphs; a sensory graphic organizer for the attic; a page with ways to begin a story; sensory word list; said is dead word list; an instructional page on how to replace “to be” verbs; a list of verbs that can be used in place of “went”; and finally a figurative language review.
This packet is not intended to be handed to students with no instruction or modeling. These handouts are perfect for guiding instruction and for students to keep in their writer’s notebook as
reference tools. Enjoy helping create better writers!
