Shrink the Paragraph Main Idea Comprehension Game
A well known comprehension strategy for test passages is to write a main idea beside each paragraph in a passage. Most of our students know this strategy, but may become weary of practicing the strategy in isolation. Sometimes it's helpful to add some spice by practicing with a partner, especially near test time.
This partner game engages students in writing a main idea for each paragraph in a passage by find the main who or what and the main thing the who or what did in ten words or less.
Students take turns being the coach and player. The coach follows a script on a card that gives hints to the player who is working out the paragraph main idea.
A score card is included if students want to make the game competitive.
The game can be used with any passage and any reading level from 3rd grade through high school. Laminate cards for more durability.
I use this game with my students, and they enjoy the experience. I hope your students will enjoy the game.
