PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This inquiry activity leads students through a patient history, pedigree analysis, microscopy analysis of blood, and genetic analysis in order to determine the patient's illness (sickle cell anemia). This activity includes two options for teacher implementation and ordering information. (See preview)

I used this activity with biology students at an alternative high school but this could easily be used with middle school students. Students should have prior knowledge of how to use a microscope and have studied genetics (pedigree charts and using a codon chart). I would suggest completing the activity before discussing sickle cell anemia in class.
