This guided activity brings together content from evolution, protein synthesis and mutations. Students will engage in the central dogma through a relevant, short study of Sickle Cell Disease. Students will augment their learning by viewing the HHMI short film on Malaria and Sickle Cell Disease (as part of the Making of the Fittest series) and completing the optional protein folding, interactive animation from Edheads.
Each section can stand alone, be completed as a class and/or completed individually. Likewise, the viewing of the HHMI film can be placed within in the activity, given as homework or watched as a class (as a preview), or used at the end of the activity as a summary and discussion piece. Better Biology has also used this as review for final examination prep.
This activity is suitable for college prep, honors and AP students.
