I like to start my classes with teaching Siddhartha, and I have my students complete this writing project to help me get to know them better. I ask students to write roughly page-length entries on important events in their life and on who they want to become. Example topics include significant childhood memories, favorite relationships, and role models. Students then compile their writings into a binder or a creative container and are encouraged to decorate their containers with pictures, quotes, and symbols that define who they are. I find that this project helps them understand Siddhartha as they analyze the path on which they're currently traveling and helps to build a classroom community.
