This is a Literature Response Log for Sideways Stories From Wayside School by Louis Sachar
I use the literature log with small groups who are homogeneously grouped by reading level or interest. The literature log is a way for students to discuss and respond in writing to each chapter of the book as they read. In a literature log I aim to incorporate different levels of questions (comprehension, analysis, prediction, summary, etc.) throughout the reading. I always have the students read from the actual text. I vary the reading between students reading aloud in turn around the table, choral reading, and silent reading.
In my classroom, a teacher is present to facilitate the discussion of each day’s question, and to check for understanding. Through these questions I focus on students writing in complete sentences, rephrasing the question into their answer, and writing with correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I also incorporate paragraph writing into a few literature responses, as I have students practice writing paragraphs on an on-going basis. The answers for this literature log vary based on predictions and the students understanding. Of course, some questions do have “right” answers, as some are based directly on the text. This one uses the GATE icons for depth and complexity as a way of orienting the framework of the questions.
