Sharpen your students' listening skills while reading a hilarious novel! This activity is aligned to the new Common Core Speaking and Listening standards, as it requires students to become active listeners and requires them to respond through drawing to the story they are listening to.
This imagery journal was designed to be used with the book Sideways Stories from Wayside School, by Louis Sachar. As the chapters are read aloud by the teachers, students should close their eyes and create a mental picture of what the character looks like, based on the author’s descriptions. During or after the teacher read-aloud, students should sketch a picture of the character. There is one page for each character/chapter. Invite students to add details such as the setting or other plot details.
When you are finished reading this novel aloud to your class, each student will have a book of the characters that made them laugh as they shared the book with you.
