Please click on the video preview above
to see how these activities work.
In this resource you will find an interactive PowerPoint presentation and a black and white version of the emergent reader for independent practice.
There are 24 slides in the PowerPoint presentation (plus a credits slide):
Slide 1: Introduce the word
Slide 2: Sign the word
Slide 3: Learn to write the word
Slide 4: Ask what the kids notice about the word (How many letters are in the word, is there a word inside the word, does it have double letters, are there any funny sounds (digraphs, vowels that make the wrong sound, etc.), does it look like another word they know? The possibilities are endless. Let the kids lead.
Slide 5: Kids move and spell the word with the movements. (Example: a-n-d and 3 times while doing jumping jacks.)
Slide 6: Name some words that rhyme with the sight word. You can write them down or just yell them out. The next slide is a movement slide so there is time to erase :)

Slide 8: Trace the word. Have two kids come to the board, or have all kids write it in the air or on a partner's back.
