I used this book by writing the first page together like this, "I like pizza and jellybeans," said _____. Then students will walk around and try to find a friend that likes jellybeans AND pizza (not together but likes them both). Once they find that friend, they will write their name copying it from their nametag.
My goal is for students to see that the words they are writing have purpose. And that they can use resources around the room (like nametags and word walls) for writing.
Students really loved this book and actually said out loud, “this is the best day ever” when writing! Can’t beat that!
