Product Description
In second grade, sight word knowledge is extremely important. The
English language consists of many words that are not decodable.
(Words we just have to know and memorize!) The spelling of these
words is irregular and are usually unable to be sounded out. These
“oddball” words are called, “sight words.” They are words one
must know and read by sight - right away! Research has shown
the more sight words a child can read, the better a reader he/she
will be.

Our second grade sight word list consists of 120 words each child must be able to read by the end of second grade. (I have pulled mainly from the dolch word list and tried to put them in order starting from those most frequently found in books.) There are 12 lists. Each list contains 10 words as well as 10 phrases which use those 10 words in a context phrase. All of those words are included within the Monkey Sight Word Booklet. (Directions on how to assemble the books are included in the purchase!)

Here is how I use it in my class: All students will start on List 1. Depending on each child and their reading ability, they will progress at their own rate. It may take one child 3 weeks to move to List 2 and it may take another 1 week to move on. That’s ok! Each child learns at a different rate. In order for a student to move to the next list of words, they must be able to read every word on that list. They also must be able to read, with fluency, the phrases. They should be able to read the phrases and sound like they are talking (not like a robot). Each student must bring the Monkey Book to school on Fridays so I can test them on their list. If they pass the list, they will receive a sticker in the circle and square of that list. I use this as part of their weekly homework and parents love it! The students and parents get to see the progress of learning the words each week until they have mastered all 12 lists! Also included in this purchase is an Assessment Form - I test my students in Sept, Jan, and May on all 120 words to monitor and show growth. This is the tracking form I use. There are also 2 different parent letters describing how to use the Monkey Sight Word Book at home.

Note: I also have a first grade sight word booklet - it and used the same way - the only difference is the words.
