One of the most effective and powerful reading skill that young children must learn is to build a sight word vocabulary. When a child is able to identify sight words they are well on their way to becoming a thriving reader and writer. In 2007 my kindergarten class was having a difficult time learning their sight words. The words were being taught in isolation and the children were failing to make any connections to the words. As a teacher I knew I had to come up with a strategy to increase student achievement in this area. I have developed simple poems that teach sight words. These poems promote vocabulary development, concepts of print and oral language while increasing student achievement in reading and writing. The sight words are taught in a specific sequential order to promote word retention, word comprehension, and sentence writing. In addition each poem contains common nouns and verbs that help young children should know. Within in the first month of school your students will be reading and writing sentences.

Weeks 29-37 sight words include: all, ate, who, will, eat, four, there, are, under, what, be, this, on, that, put, came, with, at, must, and stop. Each week there is a new poem that teaches a set of words, a handwriting sheet, and a little book with 5-6 sentences that reinforce each sight word. Weeks 29-37 includes 7 poems that teach 20 words. Sight Words Made Simple has a total of 38 poems that teaches 83 words. This can be used as a supplement to any curriculum or as a sight word curriculum. In addition these poems can be used as a sight word center for the entire school year. I have also included a sample weekly lesson plan and a quarterly assessment.

Not only did my children begin to learn their sight words, but their reading levels and the ability to write independently significantly increased. I have witnessed the benefits of an effective sight word curriculum being used with emergent & early/developing readers. It is my desire that Sight Words Made Simple, a sight word curriculum for emergent & early/developing readers, provide educators with the tools to help children learn their sight words, apply them in reading and writing, become confident readers and writers, and help build a strong academic literacy foundation.
