My school recently adopted the Journeys reading series. We previously used Reading Street, and the first week we gave the students the weekly test, we were surprised, no, shocked to find it was 11 pages long (and they just get longer as the weeks go on!)!
One part of the test my students struggle with heavily is the Vocabulary section. The vocabulary section consists of sentences with missing words. The missing words are the high frequency words taught during the week’s lessons. This section of the test (according to the directions) requires students to read both the sentences and answer choices to determine the correct missing word.
Most of my students come to me from kindergarten not being able to read fluently and not having retained the first 100 Fry words they are supposed to learn in kindergarten. This part of the test was very overwhelming for them as they struggled to read and comprehend the sentences.
I created these bracelets to supplement the fluency and vocabulary resources I already use in my classroom and for homework. We make them on Monday morning when we go over our high frequency words for the first time. I encourage them to look at their wrists often to practice reading the words. I also make extra copies so that if they want to continue to wear a bracelet daily to practice they may.
Three versions are provided: in a kid-friendly font, a font using the a and g as they typically see in print, and a version where students can color in the words. Print on colored paper to make it more fun or plain white will work too!
How many times have your students been working and used their scrap paper to make bracelets? Each page will print 10 bracelets for your kiddos. Enjoy! :)
