These mixed up sentences are the perfect way to practice sight word fluency with beginning readers. I designed this activity to make whole group sight word practice engaging, but it would also work well as a guided reading activity or for sight word intervention.

How to use:

  • First, you will mix up a sentence and have students help you fix it. Repeat with the other sentences.
  • Then, you will have students read the sentences with you - read in a normal voice, LOUD voice, quiet voice, or silly voice.
  • Next, students will make their own sentences in their notebooks. When they finish, I have them read the sentences to me and then to a friend.
  • Last, optional writing pages are included so that students can write their own sentence that follows the pattern.

Each set includes 4 patterned sentences that have a picture at the end. I included the picture instead of a word because the focus is on sight word fluency, not reading strategies. When students read the sentences, they can say any word that would match the picture (for example: bee, honeybee, bumblebee).
