This is my Sight Word Fluency Sentence Cards! This is one of my favorite ways to get my students recognizing sight words within a context, and to practice reading with inflection and fluency. They are great for small group or independent practice. Let me explain how I use these in my classroom…
Each month we get a new set of 10 sight words. (I start August/Sept with 7 of the simplest sight words; the rest of the months have 10.)
I included a full sheet with all of the sight words to display in the classroom. We go over these words every day.
Next is a sheet with individual word cards for the new words in the unit. I cut these apart and use them as flashcards or practice cards for students. I also send home a copy for students to practice with at home.
Next are the fluency sentence cards. I print, laminate and cut these cards apart. There are 24 for each set. I punch a hole in the top left corner and put them on a binder ring. I usually make a few sets, and students can grab and practice during centers or when they finish work early. I also use these sentence cards in small groups.
These cards are plain white with black text to mimic what they will encounter most frequently in books. Each card has a small picture clue in the corner to help with unfamiliar words. Most of the non-sight words in the sentences are simple CVC words that can be sounded out.
In units 2-6, the sentences contain sight words from the current list as well as all previous lists so students continue to practice what they have learned. The summary unit has 48 additional sentence cards that cover all sight words.
Finally, I included a full size sheet that has all of the sentences on it. This is another tool that you can send home for additional practice.
The sight words I teach are all of the pre-primer Dolch words, as well as number words, and some words from the primer list. There are a total of 57 words in all 6 units.
This set-up has really helped my students learn sight words in context of sentences. I used to find that they could recognize words on their own, but not in a sentence. This also helps them practice reading with fluency and inflection.
