We all know sight word recognition is crucial for fluent reading. However, many ways we practice aren't the most fun for our students. My favorite way to practice sight words in my classroom is through games.
All of the sight words used come from 1st Grade Reading Wonder Unit 2.
This is 4 PowerPoint files. Each one containing a different game to help your students master their sight words.
The games include:
*Fast Fluency - Run through the slides as quickly as possible. I time the kids to see how long it takes them to complete. Mistakes must be corrected. Each time the kids try to beat their previous days score. This is the simplest game, but is my kids favorite.
*Fluency Fun - This game will have your students moving around learning, exercising, and having fun. During the slideshow students will read the words. Every so often an exercise will pop up. Students complete that exercise for the number of times listed on the slide. This game always gets my kids hearts pumping. Make sure they have plenty of room between them.
*Fluency Fun 2 - This is the same as the previous game only with different exercises.
*HFW Bump - During this game the students will read the words on the slideshow. Occasionally, they will see the word BUMP. When this happens they switch with the person closest to them. This game usually needs a little more direction when starting to help kids move easily and not get confused.
I hope your students enjoy the games as much as mine! Happy Learning :)
