LEFT HAND ONLY!
Finding creative and engaging ways to have kids commit the reading and writing of sight words to memory is a challenge! This product is intended to spice up that work!
The idea is once you have taught the sight word (see my productHow to Teach a Sight Word
) you take the same sight word from this product and post it outside your classroom door. Each morning and every time the kids re-enter the room, they give it a high five as they read it and/or spell it. You can also have the kids use their hand as a scanner, holding it up to the word and then reading and/or spelling it. The constant interaction with the word will no doubt build automaticity. How fun is that??
For those who worry this may produce anxiety, you as the teacher, can scaffold by saying to the child and pointing, “This is the word an. a-n, an. What’s the word?” The child repeats it back and then enters. I would keep the word posted for a week and then add a new word the following week. This way there is a constant new word being added to an old word, so really it is up for a two week cycle. The hands are in two colors to allow for cultural sensitivity.
Also included are two editable hands to add your own words. The following 63 words are included in this product: a, all, am, an, and, are, at, big, but, by, can, come, did, do, down, for, get, go, going, got, had, has, have, he, here, him, his, I, in, is, it, if, like, look, me, my, no, not, of, off, on, or, play, put, said, saw, see, she, so, that, the, they, this, to, up, was, we, went, what, when, will, with, and you.
***Make sure you know where you will hang these prior to buying so you will know whether to get the left hand or the right hand product.
