This unit is a great way for students to take ownership in their learning. They are in charge of tracking their progress and choosing the words they want to learn each week. It is intended to be used with sight words (or any word work).
*Start by assessing your students on the sight words (Dolch words, Fry words, etc.) that you want them to master this year. (I included assessment recording sheets for the Dolch word lists.)
*Record the words that the student missed on the recording sheet.
*Each week I have the students choose 5-10 words to work on that week. At the end of the week the students are assessed over the words they chose. Assessment sheets are included.
*Students keep track of the words they spelled correctly on the assessment. If they missed the word, then they can practice that word again during another week.
*Once the student has gotten a certain number of words correct, they get to add a gum ball to their gum ball machine.
*Once a student has earned a certain number of gum balls, they get a special surprise! I have included an award you can use. There’s a color version and a black and white version. You could copy this one on colored paper.
*Also included in this unit are some homework options that students can use to practice their words at home. There are also some activities you can use during word work stations to practice your words.
*There are editable pages for the student recording sheet, assessments, awards, etc. These pages can be edited using Power Point.
