This is a sight word reader introducing students to a mystery on a farm: something is missing, and all the the animals seem to have an alibi. After the opening page, this is a predictable text reader. It is recommended that students know all but one sight word at the most (was, I, the, in, said), so that they are able to focus their attention on the two tricky words on each page. This reader is a good tool for having students make predictions about unknown words (using context clues, picture clues, and beginning/ending sounds) and then checking to be sure they are correct and make sense.
The reader is accompanied by a Teacher Notes page, which includes the following:
Notes for how to preview the text and make predictions
Ideas for working with students to decode unfamiliar words
Suggested follow-up questions based on the Common Core Standards
A read-aloud connection to engage students in exploring another mystery
