Do you have students who struggle to learn their sight words? This year, I set up rings with ten Dolch words. I randomly selected the words from the appropriate list (first Primer, then First Grade) and gave my sight-word learners their own set of words to practice at home and recite to me each day. If the student was able to read all ten words instantly and correctly, they would earn a hole punch. 10 punches meant new words. (I typically traded out five words, keeping the more challenging ones on the ring for another week or two of practice.) Every once in a while, I’d pull out the mastered words and quiz the student on the entire deck, to ensure that the words remained in their mastery...if a word needed more review, I added it back in on the ring!
