There are so many possible letter combinations whirling around in a child’s mind as they try to spell a word. I use this flip chart to eliminate some of those overwhelming possibilities. If my students are writing and unsure about a word, before they ask for my help, they use the flip chart. Often they find that the letter they think will come next is not even an option, and thus they are able to eliminate it. It also allows them to test different spellings. For example, if a student is trying to spell “cat” (Easy example, I know). Using the flip chart they may put together C-I-T. They are then able to see the letters separately to sound them out and discover the first letter sounds right, and they know the last letter sounds right, so the middle cards must flip to find a better fit.
