Description
This sight word sticks bundle includes the Kindergarten, First Grade and Second Grade sight word sticks craftivities with visuals for each sight words and data sheets! One of many ways to use these incorporates using paint stirrers for students to read sight words and attach clothes pins to make their sight words stand up. These Sight Word sticks have stood the test of time and are a wonderful addition to any literacy center. The sight words are supplemented with images, adding additional visual support. Having multiple levels available allows for seamless differentiation among your students.
Now including Data Sheets for each level to allow for pre/post data collection and progress monitoring.
To create:
Print image pages on card stock. At this point, you can then select to use the sight word sticks in various manners. The words on the sight word sticks are color coded by level to allow for easy sorting and differentiation among your students.
You can:
(1) simply laminate them as is, cut them into strips of ten and have the students read the targeted words as they travel down the strip or use the strip as a bookmark,
(2) Glue or use Mod Podge to adhere the sight word strips onto paint stirrers for extra stability. Then paint an extra layer of glue/Mod Podge over the strips to seal them or use clear spray paint. This is personally my preferred method for long term use. I have had great success with having paint stirrers donated when I explained that I was using them with my students. (Extra tip: the paint stirrers at Wal-Mart are blank - not printed with any advertisements). My students love to make their own individual sticks too which can be a fun activity in itself! They love to take ownership in what they have made. The students then match clothespins adorned with the same sight words to their sticks. When the students clip the clothespins the bottom of the paint stirrer, it can then stand like a caterpillar/love bug when they complete it. It looks especially cute with some googly eyes on the end of the paint stirrer. You can also have them place play-dough, tokens or flat rocks/marbles on the words as they say them. Let your creative juices flow. That’s what we all do best, after all!
(3) Laminate the strips and apply velcro to the back of the strips and to paint stirrers so that you can use the paint stirrers for extra stability but you can switch out what strips you adhere to them. I find that one velcro dot one either end of the strip does the trick!
