This resource develops a student's sight vocabulary
and phonological awareness
at the same time.
In this activity, kindergartners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders sort high frequency words by the number of syllables in them. Sorting into categories is an excellent activity for children because it helps their brains develop
! But sorting by syllables also has other advantages.
Counting syllables is one of the first phonological awareness activities students engage in on the road to literacy. By sorting words by number of syllables, youngsters develop syllable and word awareness, practice one-to-one correspondence, and get ready for more challenging activities such as blending and segmenting phonemes.
Gaining a sight vocabulary is also an important part of learning to read. Many of the high frequency words
in early reading materials are nonphonetic and have to be memorized. I have included both phonetic and nonphonetic words in this kit—words you might put on your word wall. The words are sorted by reading level.
To complete this worksheet activity, children sort either 1/2 syllable, or 1/2/3 syllable words. There are two lists of words for each sort, grouped according to frequency and reading level.
