Description
The Sight Word Wallet for Word Detectives is an engaging way to encourage your students to decode words and not guess when reading independently during Reader’s Workshop and increase their sight word fluency.
Recommended Use #1: Self-selected Sight Words
• While students are reading, encourage them to record the mystery words they encounter and record them on “mystery money”. These words are stored in the “Mystery Words” pocket of their wallet.
• Students and their Reading Partners practice those words until they become sight words. Once they know the words by sight they can be placed in the “Case Closed” pocket of the wallet.
• Have your students practice their “Case Closed” words once weekly to maintain their sight word fluency.
Recommended Use #2: Teacher-assigned Sight Words
• Using a Fry’s or Dolch sight word list, assign your students 5-6 sight words and place them in the “Mystery Words” pocket.
• Students take their sight Word Wallet home to practice nightly with their families.
• Meet with your students periodically and assess whether they “solved” the mystery words. If they have, move them to the “Case Closed” pocket of the wallet. Assign new words to replace “mystery words” that are now known by sight.
• Have your students practice their “Case Closed” words once weekly to maintain their sight word fluency.

Simple Assembly Instructions
1. Print the wallet
2. Fold the wallet on the dotted lines
3. Trim the curved areas of the wallet
4. Staple the edges and on the fold.
