Learning Sight Words, or more accurately, High Frequency Words, is an essential part of every Early Years classroom.
These words also feature predominately in Learning Support and ESL programs.
This handy Sight Words Resource sets out the first sets of key sight words for students to learn in a handy ready-to-use booklet that can be copied, folded (and stapled if you like) and used as
- part of their literacy work in class
- part of the homework program
- a record of achievement
- spelling of sight words
There are also extra blank pages and covers for additional sets for you to use for childrens' own spelling words, or your own preferred sequence of words. An alternate sequence is provided in the appendix for you to choose from. Both sequences are based on
linguistics research by well respected sources.
This resource was primarily created as a combined school/homework resource to ensure students developed their sight word knowledge at their own pace.
The columns were used (by teachers, parents, teacher aides) to record accuracy of word identification
- tick for words immediately known
- symbol such as 's/o' for words that can be deciphered using sounding out strategies
- dots for unknown words
Some teachers used the columns to mark only ticks to indicate the words was instantly recognised. Children read the words/ revised the words frequently. The aim was to achieve 3 ticks which indicated revision no longer needed.
The columns can also be used to indicate completion of tasks relating to these words
- rainbow writing
- writing in phoneme or syllables
- identifying the tricky part
- identifying words in words
- identifying rhyming words
and so on
I hope you enjoy using this resource.
