This contains all 1,000 Fry's words. Students will study each list until they have mastered all 1,000 words. Students in grades 3-5 can move on to the definitions of these words.
They are printed on different colored paper to help students memorize the words. This also doubles as a wonderful dictionary for looking up how to spell words when they are writing. Students will say, "oh! I saw that word when I was studying my blue list!" and they will go to see how to spell the word.
The students will all start with the first 100 word list. I quiz the students once a week on the list that they are studying. They are expected to say the word immediately the first try without hesitation. I take their list and they read from one of mine. When they are reading a list to me they have 2 minutes to read the 100 words. I then highlight each word that they correctly read. They then will need to study the few un-highlighted words on their list (if any) as well as the next set of 100 words.
I allow for 10-15 min of study time in class and I encourage practice at home as well. It is obvious the ones that practice and the ones that don't. To practice they can point to the word and say it out loud, they can work with a partner, they can use a power point as well. In class I will show a power point of all the words for us all to practice together.I will show whatever list most of the class is on at the time.
They have until the end of the school year to memorize all 1,000 words. This is a wonderful way to increase the fluency of your readers!
