Sight words are words that cannot be sounded out or the skill of sounding out the word has not been taught. In order to achieve sight word success, students learn sight words as units and are not asked to attempt to sound out these words using phonetic decoding.
After the initial teaching of letter names and sounds, Jacquie’s lessons begin with the introduction of basic sight words. Depending on the age and skill level of the student(s), the length of time required to teach each lesson may vary from one day to several weeks.
